First Cleveland Masjid Celebrates 75 Years of Service

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatuhu.

Surat al Fatiha 5-7: "Thee (alone) we worship; Thee alone we ask for help. Show us the straight path, The path of those whom Thou hast favored; Not (the path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who went astray."

Alhamdulillah!

The First Cleveland Mosque is honored to announce our 75th Anniversary. This major milestone is a source of great honor for the Muslim community. Established in 1937, The First Cleveland Mosque is the second oldest Islamic Organization in the United States. Over the years, The First Cleveland Mosque has persevered, demonstrating consistency and growth. To commemorate this occasion, we will host a two day event, September 14-15, 2012, themed The Legacy Continues Through Education and Community ServicePlease see our event page for details.

The mission of the First Cleveland Mosque is to embrace and propagate the fundamental teachings of Islam through service to our community according to the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.). Salla Allahu alaihi Wa Sallam

History

The First Cleveland Masjid is one of the oldest Muslim institutions in the U.S. Founded in 1937 by Al Hajj Imam Wli Akram an African American. First Cleveland Masjid Remains a testimony of the powerful attraction that Americans have towards the beliefs and culture of Islam.

Al Hajj Imam Wali Akram, Born Walter Reese Gregg in Caldwell Texas on August 04, 1904 was introduced to Islam in the early 1920s and went on to establish The First Cleveland Masjid in 1937 with the creation of the Muslim 10 Year Plan. The Mission of the Masjid was to entertain and educate the Muslim community. Imam Wali A Akram continued to spread Islam's message of peace, love and unity, which made the First Cleveland Masjid  the milestone of peace making among the diverse religious groups across greater Cleveland.

Over the years The First Cleveland Masjid persevered, demonstrating consistency and growth. In fact The Masjid was instrumental in the development of several other Islamic Institutions Through out The Greater Cleveland area.

Since the genesis of The First Cleveland Masjid, this historic institution resided at the following locations in Cleveland Ohio before relocating in 1975 to its current edifice at 3613 East 131st Street:

In 1984 the Leadership was passed on to Al Hajj Imam Mahmoud A. Akram who served as the Imam of the First Cleveland Masjid until 1989.

During his tenure, Imam Mahmoud continued to teach the community the value of unity, harmony and love which has been promulgated by the leadership of The First Cleveland Masjid since its inception.

Imam Abbas Ahmad the grandson of Imam Wali Akram assumed the leadership of the Masjid in 1989 and is currently leading the congregation of over 200 members.

Today, The First Cleveland Masjid actively promotes interfaith dialogue to enhance the understanding of Islam. This Celebrated Cornerstone continues to encourage a positive image of American Muslims.

Harvard University Announcement
No tuition and no student loans

Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."

If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, HarvardUniversity wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!
