Travel to Indonesia this Summer!

Legacy International, in partnership with the US State Department, is sponsoring a program to promote environmental action – the Indonesian–US Youth Leadership Exchange. Five American youth will be selected to travel to Indonesia for three weeks in July 2012 to gain more knowledge and skills in the fields of environmental conservation, leadership, and cross-cultural education. We are seeking young people who are between the ages of 15 and 18 who are interested in environmental/global issues and travel and have demonstrated leadership abilities. A brief description of the program: Part 1– Residential training program at Legacy's Global Youth Village in June (June 24-July 3) to include cross cultural training with Indonesian peers. The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations' Washington, DC Summer Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students a ten-week professional, academic, and career opportunity internship in the nation's capital. The program features a demanding mix of professional involvement, intellectual challenge, career exploration, and cultural encounters designed to provide interns with a rich and varied experience during their time in Washington.

* Professional workplace experience: Interns are placed with one of over a dozen Near East and Arab world-related organizations in Washington, D.C., where they are expected to work 35-40 hours/week under the direct supervision of their host organizations.
* Academic seminars: Interns take part in twice weekly seminar sessions designed to provide them with greater depth of knowledge about the Arab world, to underscore the cultural, economic, and political diversity of Arab states, and to explore the intricacies of Arab-U.S. relations.
* Site visits: Interns receive a behind-the-scenes look at many of the central institutions of federal government, national security policymaking, international diplomacy, and international business.

Sponsorship: The program is administered by National Council professionals and staff, together with more than two dozen of America's foremost scholars and leading foreign affairs practitioners. The programs, activities, and functions represented by the organizations and corporations that provide the professional work experience component of the program are varied. Included among placements in recent years have been educational development and exchange organizations, bimonthly and quarterly publications, humanitarian relief groups, broadcasting networks, area studies centers, international transportation companies, foreign trade associations, peace and justice advocacy groups, and a variety of non-governmental organizations.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The National Council's Summer Internship Program offers professional work experiences combined with twice weekly evening seminars that bring academic experts and experienced foreign policy practitioners to meet with the interns in candid off-the-record discussions and free wheeling question and answer sessions. Our goals are: (1) to provide a realistic Washington, D.C. work experience that will pave the way to career development; (2) to provide interns with first-hand experience behind-the-scenes of the foreign policy analysis and advocacy process in Washington, D.C.; (3) to provide a strong academic component dealing with U.S. political, economic, and cultural relations with Arabia and the Gulf region; (4) to help participants begin the process of career networking by introducing them to working professionals in government, business, journalism, and NGOs; and, (5) to highlight the wide range of career opportunities awaiting those who aspire to work in the field of U.S.-Arab relations as well as to provide counseling on the graduate school and fellowship application processes.

As complements to the program, interns will also be exposed to D.C. in a less formal manner via films, cultural events, embassy and museum visits, off-the-record conversations with former diplomats, group dinners, and suggestions for exploring the sights and sounds of Washington, D.C. This allows students not only to experience living and working in the city but also encourages them to appreciate the cultural diversity of the urban environment and the exciting cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities available in the Nation's Capital.

COST AND FELLOWSHIP STIPEND

A $125 non-refundable program fee must be submitted with the application. This fee helps to defray the costs of administering the summer internship program and the accompanying seminar presentations. Internship program participants, upon successful fulfillment of the program's academic and internship requirements, receive a $1,000 fellowship stipend.

HOW TO APPLY

Interested undergraduate or graduate students should send a letter of interest (1-2 pages) to the National Council office by mail or e-mail. This letter should provide basic information about yourself, your interests, previous course work related to politics, economics, foreign policy, and the Middle East, and some indication of the type of internship that would most interest you. Please recognize that this letter of interest is a vital part of the application and serves as the National Councils introduction to the potential intern. 1) A double-spaced essay (no more than 2 pages in length) on the topic:
U.S. Foreign Policy in the Arab World: Successes, Failures, and Future Prospects;
2) A resume or curriculum vitae;
3) Transcripts of all university-level work;
4) Two letters or recommendation, at least one of them from a faculty member who knows your work well;

PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Nearly 230 students have participated in this program to date. Some have joined the U.S. Foreign Service. Several work as staff to Members of Congress or congressional committees dealing with matters of foreign policy. Many have proceeded to graduate school to obtain their masters degrees or doctorates in international relations with an emphasis on the Arab countries, the Middle East, and the Islamic world. Some have been employed by the National Council and other non-governmental organizations. Still others have become professional foreign affairs journalists. These are just a few of the opportunities that program alumni have encountered.

HOUSING

Estimated cost for ten-weeks of student housing in Washington, D.C. is $2,000 - $2,500, not including meals and incidentals. Many National Council interns choose to take advantage of the summer housing programs at George Washington University because of its central location and the large summer intern community that gathers there.

2012 High School Essay Contest Explores Legal Complications of Cyberbullying

What are the legal ramifications for schools when students are victims of cyber bullying? Do parents bear the responsibility for their child's behavior? What is the appropriate course of action?

Virginia high school students are invited to submit essays that address those issues, for a chance to win the Law in Society Competition, cosponsored by the Virginia State Bar's Communications Committee, and its Litigation Section. The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2012.

All Virginia students aged 19 or younger and enrolled in grades 9–12 or a home-school equivalent are eligible to submit an essay that addresses the contest hypothetical on cyber bullying. The hypothetical is posted at http://www.vsb.org/site/public/law-in-society-hypothetical.

Essays are limited to 1,000 words, and are judged on how well they demonstrate the student’s understanding of the role and value of the legal system in everyday life. Entries will be judged by attorneys, judges, and educators. The purpose of the contest is to awaken an interest in law and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution.

The first place winner will receive $2,300 cash and their winning essay will be published on the VSB website. Other awards include $1,850 cash (second place), $1,350 cash (third place), and honorable mentions of $250 cash. All winners receive a plaque and copy of Strunk and White’s Elements of Style. Awards will be presented in May at the winners’ schools.

Dr. Aamir Sheikh began his Islamic studies at the Institute for Islamic and Arabic Sciences in Fairfax, VA in 1997 and has been a student of knowledge since.He has studied in Jordan, Syria, and Morocco and has obtained ijazaat (licenses) in numerous Islamic subjects including Islamic Creed and Belief, Hadith Sciences, and Prophetic Hadith from numerous scholars throughout the world. Dr. Sheikh has conducted short courses and classes for over 13 years throughout the US, and continues to conduct Islamic studies short courses in the Baltimore metropolitan area. In addition to his Islamic training, Dr. Sheikh received a Master's degree in Education and a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Maryland. Abstract:
In this discussion the speaker will share the value that systems engineering brings to a project, and how it could eliminate rework, improve quality and achieve sustainable products with large residual value. The seminar will allow for a mock hands on product development effort where the participants will break down into a number of development teams working on the delivery of a new product.

Speaker:
Ayman Nassar has been an IEEE member since 1989 as a student. He holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University and a Masters degree in Systems Engineering and Engineering Management from University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He has held several technical and managerial new product design roles at Acer, Fujitsu, Northrop Grumman, RPM Consulting, Ericsson and IBM. He offers independent technology management consulting in areas of systems engineering, project management and business planning, and works for Enterprise Community Partners. Invite your friends, neighbors, and anyone else who would enjoy hearing Goddard planetary astrophysicist Dr. Tim Livengood speak at the latest installment of the Soffen Lecture Series, "The Accidental Observatory," at the Goddard Visitor Center on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at 7:00 p.m.

In 2005, NASA launched a daring spacecraft mission called Deep Impact. It was designed to accelerate into and impact a comet to blow out a plume of material. Studying this material would increase understanding of what comets are made from.

The Deep Impact spacecraft consisted of two parts, the impactor that was vaporized and the remaining flyby component that sailed into space, past the comet, collecting data along the way. After the remaining spacecraft gathered the information on the celestial object, the data-collecting spacecraft continued on its journey around the Sun. The journey continues.

NASA called on the scientific community to submit ideas for a new use of Deep Impact for research projects and scientific studies. The story that developed was one of how inventive scientists and engineers conceived a new life for a veteran spacecraft to explore our solar system and to chart a path towards someday exploring other solar systems. The spacecraft has looked at distant worlds. It has looked at comets. It has looked at Earth. And Deep Impact could do it all again. Come to the lecture on Thursday, December 8 to hear all of the details.

During his 30-year NASA career, Dr. Gerald Soffen (1926-2000) led the science team for NASA's Viking program, was Director of Life Sciences at NASA Headquarters, Project scientist for NASA's Earth Observing System, and created NASA Academy, NASA's premiere leadership training internship. The Viking 2 lander was posthumously named after Dr. Soffen and a crater on Mars was named "Soffen." He was best known, however, for his passion for inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Youth Communications Platform Hold First Fundraising Dinner

First Islamic Heritage Museum Opens in the Nations Capital

With the grace of Allah (SWT) for the first time ever an Islamic Heritage Museum opens its doors in Washington DC. After nearly a decade of having a mobile Islamic Heritage Museum, Amir Muhammad, the founder of America's first Islamic History Museum has found a home for his unique collections of historical artifacts.

Br. Amid Nashid Muhammad ibn West, is a well-known businessman and published poet. He converted to Islam in 1974, and he is the author of the well-known book "Muslims in America: Seven Centuries of History, Collections and Stories of American Muslims". The book was first published in 1998, and written so he can leave his children, grandchildren and the general public a clearer picture of America's rich Islamic heritage.

Br. Muhammad is currently the president of Collections and Stories of American Muslims, a non-profit organization which provided the traveling exhibit and museum. When asked about the new museum, Br. Ayman Nassar, president of ILIA mentioned "It is a first step that needed to be taken a long time ago by the Muslim ummah in America to understand their past and have a vision for the future". Br. Ayman mentions "I have read brother Muhammad's book back in 2001, and have found it not only intriguing and educational but fascinating, I think the book is a must read for every Muslim living in America, it is simple, to the point and I recommend it to youth that I teach and coach on weekends, as part of their Islamic studies curriculum".

ILIA Receives 501c(3) Tax Exemption Determination

Alhamedellah, with the grace of Allah (SWT) ILIA has received its letter of determination from the IRS stating its tax exemption status. The IRS has determined that ILIA's work and mission qualifies the organization to be exempt from Federal income tax under section 501c(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to ILIA are deductible under section 170 of the Code. ILIA is also qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers or gifts.

ILIA is also further classified as a public charity, alhamedellah since its inception in 2009 ILIA has been providing financial aid to all its programs and through the generous donations it received has been able to sponsor programs at area homeless shelters and low income populations for leadership development and training. ILIA Discusses Repentance at Loyola Blakefield School

ILIA's founder Ayman Nassar joined Rabbi Ilyse, Director, Kramer of the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies, and Pastor Pat Goodman, Youth Pastor, Grace Fellowship Church at Loyola Blakefield School to discuss the concept of Repentance in the three faiths of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Loyola Blakefield, an all boys middle and high school, invited three leaders for the three faiths as part of their Lent season educational programming on March 30th, 2010. The event was attended by 970, three of whom are Muslim.

The event started with an introduction by Joe Cordella, Director of Campus Ministry where he shared the mission of a Loyola Blakefield student. Principal, Antony Day ended the program by thanking the guests and students, after a short reflection and summary by Fr. Tim Brown.

Course Description:

Java is the world's most popular and widely-applied programming language, but it is large, complex, and sometimes difficult to get started with. This FREE, four-hour, fast-moving mini-course first gives an overview of Java and its application areas, then covers specific details of the most basic syntax and most important programming strategy: object-oriented programming.

BONUS: if you have a Windows laptop with a USB port, come 45 minutes early or stay late, and Marty will walk you through installing Java 6, Eclipse (a Java editor and development environment), sample code, Java programming exercises, and exercise solutions.

Prerequisites

The course is aimed at engineers, scientists, and others that have experience in *some* high-level programming language; it will move too quickly for first-time programmers. No previous Java experience is expected.

Guest Speakers Bios:
Dr. Wael Abd-Almageed holds a Ph.D. with Distinction from the University of New Mexico where he was selected Outstanding Graduate Student. He is a scientist, inventor, instructor and entrepreneur. Currently he is a Research Scientist with the University of Maryland’s Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, where he leads research activities in applications of machine learning in bioinformatics, computer vision and document image processing. Dr. Abd-Almageed recently won grants from the National Cancer Institute and the University of Maryland’s Research Frontiers, and the National Science Foundation to develop cutting-edge gene expression clustering algorithms for mining liver cancer data; and image processing, computer vision and software development where he invented a number of algorithms in the area of digital image processing. He is also an Adjunct Professor with the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, Canada.

Q1. I can not afford the fees for the class, is there anyway I can still attend?
Fees are used to cover the direct costs of the program/class. This particular fees includes the cost for admission to all attractions, transportation, all three meals, snacks and refreshments, class material and class supplies. Through the grace of Allah (SWT) and our generous donors ILIA offers two different types of financial support for classes. Financial aid (reduced fees up to 50%) is offered as a form of sadaqa to those who do not meet the requirements of zakat, and Financial Aid (installment payments, up to 6 installments) for those who qualify. Eligible students can receive both a discount up to 50% and installments for the remaining amount as applicable.

Q6. How big is the group?
Inshaa Allah each bus will have 45 students and 9 chaperons and 1 instructor.

Q7. I am a mom, if I join my son would we be split in the buses?
Adult sisters may join the brothers bus – although we are sure they will find the sister’s one – more comfortable and quiet. Adult fathers may not join the sisters bus to allow our sisters to be comfortable during meals and other group activities on the bus.

Q8. If we drive on our own it will not cost us $90 per person, what is the benefit of joining the ILIA group?
The program is not a trip. It is a field class including many delivery approaches (exhibits, demos, group activities, talks, peer interaction). The class is designed for high school students and young college students. The main objective of the class is to motivate and inspire our youth in becoming leaders in research and scientific innovation. Also special talks on how to excel in high school and college research assignments will be provided among many other activities. For groups up to 4 people it is more economical to join ILIA just based on a purely financial decision. You will save on gas, tolls, parking, museum fields, meals, snacks, activities’ costs and supplies.

Middle and High School Students in United States and Canada Invited to Apply for Young Naturalists Awards

The American Museum of Natural History and the ALCOA Foundation are accepting applications for the Young Naturalist Awards from middle and high school students (grades 7 to 12) across the United States and Canada.

The inquiry-based research competition was created to promote active participation in the sciences and stimulate youth to explore science careers. The program encourages students to independently explore the natural world and pursue in-depth scientific research in the areas of biology, Earth science, ecology, and astronomy. Contestants form hypotheses, conduct research, plan experiments, gather data, and report their findings in an essay.

Twelve winning students will be honored at a ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Winners will receive a scholarship as well as paid trip to the awards ceremony, where they will meet with scientists and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum. In addition, winning contestants will have their essays featured on the AMNH Web site.

Imam Moustafa Zayed the renowned Muslim author eradicating Islamophobia through the pen and tongue has recently started a new blog. Youth Project Management 101

This program is offered to youth who wish to develop project management and leadership skills. It is a mix of presentation, team activities, project development assignments, off-site projects with area Islamic institutions inshaa Allah .

ILIA is training youth on principles of project management on Saturday January 1 2011, participants in the program will have the opportunity to join a team of youth who will act as project managers assisting a Muslim social service, religious or educational organization with planning and managing small projects. Its a great opportunity to learn, give back for the sake of Allah (SWT) and to get community service credit. Teams which work in a community service project, will enter the Greater Washington DC Region Project Planning Competition.

Two Shadowing Internship Seats Available for High Schoolers

Alhamedellah ILIA has two leadership shadowing opportunities for high school students grades 10-12 for 8 weeks starting Dec 10th. Leadership shadowing shall allow the student to learn various leadership skills and styles by accompanying ILIA's leaders on various assignments. Allah (SWT) commanded Musa (pbuh) to go and shadow Al-Khidr to learn from him various traits, specifically the leadership trait of patience. It is encouraged that all young people attend a shadowing program at some point of their life to gain diverse perspectives of work, life and the application of concepts of our deen into practice.

Job shadowing is a ILIA-supervised career exploration activity. Students "shadow” ILIA's leaders as they perform activities and responsibilities. Job shadows are designed to be short term. Leadership shadows emphasize observing the leader in various situations, and occasionally assist with simple assignments. The leadership shadow provides the student a meaningful introduction to the world and provides a context for understanding the relationship and interaction between the academics taught, Islamic values and principles and the society in a leadership context.

Eligibility Requirements:
1. Student must be enrolled in a school or home schooled at one of the grades level of 10 through 12 at time of application.

3. Student must be able to take time off of school on Fridays between 12:30 and 2:30 to attend jummah prayers (brothers only)
4. Student must be able to devote 2-4 hrs a week for 8 weeks to shadow ILIA leaders.
5. Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5 or higher
6. Parental consent for student to attend the program and participate in ILIA activities on-site and off-site.

Selection Criteria:
1. Only two students shall be selected.
2. Students with best responses to "Motivation and Interest" and "Learning Objectives" shall be selected.
3. Students who are able to secure transportation to ILIA's office at internship/shadowing hours, or go to school / live within 5 miles of ILIA's office.

Successful Completion Requirements:

Students will be required to participate at least 2 hrs a week, and a minimum of 20 hrs over the 8 weeks.
Students shall be assessed on commitment, quality of notes taken, demonstration of application of concepts learned during the leadership shadow in various situations, motivation, a short essay at the completion of the program on the benefit the student acquired and the level of responsibility demonstrated during the program
There shall be a nominal stipend at the end of the internship for students who successfully complete the program with a grade of A.

Tips for Successful Shadowing

Show up on time.
Ask questions at appropriate times
Dress up. You don't have to be formal. Nice Islamically compliant outfit is required
Take a notebook and pen or pencil to write notes.
Get involved and be positive.
Be appreciative and encourage others to experience an ILIA shadow internship

ILIA Launches New Youth Project Management Class

Alhamedellah with the grace of Allah (SWT), in its second year of offering of Youth Project Management (YPM 101), ILIA introduces Leading Youth Project Managers - Cost Management (YPM 201) for those who completed YPM 101 in 2009. YPM 201 builds on YPM 101 and focuses on financial cost accounting for projects. It provides youth ages 12-18 the solid understanding of all fundamental financial areas of a project from bill of material, to income sheets and project operational and capital expenses and balance sheets. The project touches on financial earned value and allows youth to communicate effectively with professional project managers in the industry as related to financial aspects of a project. The coaching this year will be offered by ILIA and ILIA will provide all participants with the same project to develop a full project plan for a new training center in Baltimore City, inshaa Allah coaching involves site visits, public hearings and lots of real-life experience.

Character Building for 60 Inmates at Local Jail

Alhamedellah ILIA in launching soon pending funds availability an innovative program at Howard County Detention Center.

The program is open to all inmates Muslims and non-Muslims who meet eligibility requirements. The jail houses 350 inmates of which approx 20 are Muslim brothers.

The program involves an 8 week, 18 course intensive character building program. Funds are needed to purchase books, training supplies and pay for three instructors. Inmates can not afford to pay for tuition so the program is offered as a grant from ILIA to the Howard County Detention Center.

It is a great dawa opportunity and a great program to assist these inmates on reentry into the society to be productive Muslims and citizens.

Training 50 Muslim Juveniles in Laurel

ILIA Joins Local Islamic Organizations in PG County, Maryland to Oppose "Facility Accessory Use" Bill

Along with half a dozen Islamic organizations from PG County, ILIA prepared a written statement opposing the proposed Bill CB-073-2010 which would have introduced changes to the definition of accessory use of facilities. The bill which if passed would have harmed religious institutions that hold activities serving the needs of its communities such as educational, athletic, social or other related.

The bill was killed by the councilman who proposed the bill on the spot as the hearing room was packed with over 200 community members, students, teachers and Muslim leaders. The quiz, a simple multiple choice check point was designed to settle some key concepts into the minds of the students, ranging from key dates mentioned in the movie, to leadership traits exhibited by the various characters and lessons learned. Although the quiz was relatively straight forward, most students received a B- grade. The top student from each category - middle school and high school - received a prize. The middle school student received a battleship game, and the high school student received a book on decision making and smart choices.

Attendees have enjoyed the speeches of Br. Maher Kharma, President of Islamic Society of Annapolis and Imam Mahmoud Abdelhady, Imam of Dar Al-Taqwa as the program started shortly after 6:30 pm. Attendees then performed maghrieb salah and enjoyed the pop corn, veggie sticks, and refreshments while they started to live the scenarios millions of Libyans have experienced in the early 20th century. Another short break for ishaa salat followed by pizza and the remaining half of the movie brought the attendees to full attention as the events in the movie became more highly paced.

ILIA meets community at Muslim FunFest

On Saturday May 29, ILIA participated in Muslim FunFest which was held in Clarsburg, MD. With over 5,000 muslims in attendance and in the midst of children's amusement rides, horeriding, and a packed bazaar, ILIA spoke about its mission, goals, and previous accomplishments. ILIA also passed out flyers for its upcoming events, including Unite Tight. Various representatives from area masjids were present, including Dar Al Taqwa, Muslim Community Center, Dar Us Salam, Islamic Society of Baltimore, and Islamic Community Center of Laurel.

The ILIA booth was staffed by Mohamed Abouerous, Haniffa Osman, and Muhammad Johnson.

ILIA participates in Islamic Society of Baltimore's SummerFest 2010

With the summer heat in full swing, ILIA participated in Islamic Society of Baltimore's SummerFest 2010 on Saturday June 26. ILIA shared information about its mission and goals with ISB's community members. ILIA also continued to promote its programs, including Making the Click/Bridging the Gap and Unite Tight and shared its prior successful programs such as Family Leadership and Mountain Strong. ILIA also met with representatives from MIST (Muslim INterscholatic Tournament) to discuss plans to add a new leadership category to next year's tournament.

The booth was staffed by Founder Ayman Nassar, Mohamed Abouelrous, May Bayomi, and Diangelou Bush, who was completing a summer internship with ILIA.

ILIA is training youth on principles of project management on Dec 5th inshaa Allah, participants in the program will have the opportunity to join a team of youth who will act as project managers assisting a Muslim social service, religious or educational organization with planning and managing small projects. Its a great opportunity to learn, give back for the sake of Allah (SWT) and to get community service credit. Teams which work in a community service project, will enter the Greater Washington DC Region Project Planning Competition.
