In Gaithersburg, the VITA program is marketed under Bank On Gaithersburg, an initiative to draw unbanked and underbanked individuals into the financial mainstream. Staff from participating financial institutions will be on-site to provide information on free financial education and to open accounts for taxpayers interested in having their refund directly deposited.  For more information visit www.gaithersburgmd.gov/bankon.

This year, to ensure that all of the taxpayer’s needs are being met, volunteers will offer referral information to food, clothing and housing assistance. Hunger Solutions staff will also be on hand to help qualified people sign up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Arab American Heritage

" Let's Give Peace a Chance: Building Cultural Bridges Toward a Shared Future Through Dialogue, inclusion and Mutual Understanding".
April is designated as the Arab American Heritage month. The above title represents the theme of the dynamic calendar of events developed by Montgomery college in celebration of this occasion.
The calendar of events for April 2012, will highlight the Arab American heritage, and the diverse cultural traditions of the Arab American Communities. It is a great opportunity for open discussions and community dialogues around current issues.
Starting from April 9 - 30, you will have a wide variety of options to appeal to all ages. There are speakers, including historians; artists and art exhibits; award winning films; and music. You will find most of these events at the College technical Center, Room 136.
Among the exciting speakers are our own Dr. Sahar Khamis, an active participant, and a contributor to our Senior Program.
You will also find Dr. Ibrahim Oweiss, MCC special guest and distinguished speaker.
Mr. Leggett, Montgomery County Executive will present this year's proclamation of April as Arab American Heritage Month, on Tuesday April 17th, at 6:00 PM, at Montgomery College Campus (TC 136)
We are forwarding to you the entire calendar of activities. Please invite family and friends. Let's build bridges.

2nd USA Science & Engineering Festival

As an educator, I am asking for your assistance to inform your colleagues and students about  the ultimate celebration of science and engineering in the US, and it will take just three simple steps:
  • Click Forward
  • Insert addresses of your colleagues, friends and students
  • Hit Send.
Here is why I need your help:

For the past year and a half I have been organizing the 2nd USA Science & Engineering Festival - the country's largest celebration of science and engineering -a  FUN, entertaining, educational and FREE event.

So why have a Science Festival? Society gets what it celebrates! As a culture, we celebrate movie stars, rock stars and athletes and we generate a lot of them...but we don't celebrate science and engineering. If our country does not turn around the interest of young people in science, we will have outsourced innovation.

The Festival has kicked off last week with our Nifty Fifty Program, and will continue with over 150 FREE events for the public and Greater Washington, DC schools leading up to the Finale Expo - all geared toward sparking an interest in Science and Engineering.
You can find out all the details at:  www.usasciencefestival.org

The grand finale will be a two day EXPO at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. on April 28-29, 2012 - over 3,000 fun, hands-on, interactive activities and 150 stage shows for all ages. There will be stuff for the mildly curious to the science professional. You can learn about fun topics like the science of the magic of Harry Potter, the mathematics of jump roping, the physics of superheroes, the chemistry of Thanksgiving Dinner, the engineering of baseball bats and balls, the science behind special effects in movies, trends in Global Warming, renewable energy sources of the future.

You can operate state-of-the-art robots, laugh with science comedians, be mesmerized by science magicians and mathemagicians, converse with astronauts, Nobel Laureates, storm chasers, science celebrities like Bill Nye the Science Guy, cast members of the MythBusters, Big Bang Theory and NCIS, and even scientists of the past, fly a fighter jet simulator, enter a virtual reality environment, be a CSI agent, learn how to transform your car so it can run off a cuisinart....and you can get info about scholarships, internships, mentorship and future jobs.

I would greatly appreciate if you would pass this info on to your colleagues and students.

Many, many thanks for your help. I hope to see you at the Finale Expo on April 28-29!
