Jack G. Shaheen Mass Communications Scholarship

Purpose: To honor Arab-American students who excel in Media Studies. 

 

Amount: $1,000 

 

Eligibility:

• College students classified as Juniors, Seniors, or enrolled in graduate school for the 2011-2012 academic year.
• Majoring in Mass Communications, Journalism, Radio, Television, and/or Film. 
• A minimum 3.0 GPA 
• A U.S. citizen of Arabic heritage

 

Please submit the following items to the ADC Research Institute:

• A one-page statement explaining your goals and why you merit the scholarship, and stating that you are a U.S. citizen of Arabic heritage.
• Two original signed letters of recommendation from professors of Mass Communications.
• Copies of articles, videos, films or other relevant media that showcases your work (these items will not be returned to you).
• Official academic transcripts, including your GPA. 
• Your permanent home address, e-mail address, phone number, and your phone number during the school year, if different.

Alhamedellah, registration is now open for Leadership in Research


Leadership in Research is an educational program for high school and college age youth developed to communicate to youth concepts of Islamic civilization and key elements of leading in research. Activities are designed for ages 13 – 23, however others could join. Children under 12 need to be accompanied by a parent or adult. Separate buses for brothers and sisters inshaa Allah is available. 


Activities:
The program inshaa Allah, comprises of the following:

• Motor coach bus transportation from DC area masjids to NYC and back
• Breakfast, lunch and refreshments
• Exhibit and tour of 1001 Inventions Tour from the UK at the New York Hall of Science
• Moving Image Tour
• Local recreation in NY area
• Critical thinking team activities led by Sister Sumayah Fahmy, Science Teacher
• Two short talks by world class local Muslim scientists and inventors, Dr. Mohammad Eltoweissy and Dr. Wael Abdelmageed
• Group discussions and reflections from around led by Br. Ayman Nassar
• Sleepover option for brothers ages 14+ available upon return inshaa Allah at Dar Al-Taqwa

Our ratio is 1 chaperon per 5 youth under 18, the program is developed by professionals educated and trained in leadership. Chaperons have experience in youth programs, and have conducted programs for several years including trips and other off-site programs. Chaperons are of the same gender as students, sister programs have at least two adult brothers over age of 40 to assist. Programs which include both genders are separated and no mixing is allowed. ILIA serves only halal and healthy food, no junk food are served.

Guest Speakers Bios:
Dr. Wael Abd-Almageed holds a  Ph.D. with Distinction from the University of New Mexico where he was selected Outstanding Graduate Student. He is a scientist, inventor, instructor and entrepreneur. Currently he is a Research Scientist with the University of Maryland’s Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, where he leads research activities in applications of machine learning in bioinformatics, computer vision and document image processing. Dr. Abd-Almageed recently won grants from the National Cancer Institute and the University of Maryland’s Research Frontiers, and the National Science Foundation to develop cutting-edge gene expression clustering algorithms for mining liver cancer data; and image processing, computer vision and software development where he invented a number of algorithms in the area of digital image processing. He is also an Adjunct Professor with the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, Canada.

Common Q&A:
 

Q1. I can not afford the fees for the class, is there anyway I can still attend?
Fees are used to cover the direct costs of the program/class. This particular fees includes the cost for admission to all attractions, transportation, all three meals, snacks and refreshments, class material and class supplies. Through the grace of Allah (SWT) and our generous donors ILIA offers two different types of financial support for classes. Financial aid (reduced fees up to 50%) is offered as a form of sadaqa to those who do not meet the requirements of zakat, and Financial Aid (installment payments, up to 6 installments) for those who qualify. Eligible students can receive both a discount up to 50% and installments for the remaining amount as applicable.

Q2. How do I get financial aid?
(1) Please complete the appropriate application from the website at http://www.islamicleadership.org/resources/forms/ (2) Email the completed form to finance@islamicleadership.org (3) Wait until you receive a discount code within 48 hrs to apply at registration time.

Q3. Can I join my child? Are fees for parents different?
Yes you can join your child. Fees are the same, since the class has no margin and fees barely cover the direct costs.

Q4. My child is turning 12 next month, the website states that minimum age is 13, can he still attend if he is a responsible student?
Yes, inshaa Allah. We will require a letter of recommendation from his school teacher, stating that he is a responsible student at school and follows instructions. The letter can be emailed directly to ILIA at ss@islamicleadership.org

Q5. What is the last day to register?
The last day to register and get a reduced fee is March 20th, 2011.

Q6. How big is the group?
Inshaa Allah each bus will have 45 students and 9 chaperons and 1 instructor.

Q7. I am a mom, if I join my son would we be split in the buses?
Adult sisters may join the brothers bus – although we are sure they will find the sister’s one – more comfortable and quiet. Adult fathers may not join the sisters bus to allow our sisters to be comfortable during meals and other group activities on the bus.

Q8. If we drive on our own it will not cost us $90 per person, what is the benefit of joining the ILIA group?
The program is not a trip. It is a field class including many delivery approaches (exhibits, demos, group activities, talks, peer interaction). The class is designed for high school students and young college students. The main objective of the class is to motivate and inspire our youth in becoming leaders in research and scientific innovation. Also special talks on how to excel in high school and college research assignments will be provided among many other activities. For groups up to 4 people it is more economical to join ILIA just based on a purely financial decision. You will save on gas, tolls, parking, museum fields, meals, snacks, activities’ costs and supplies.

Middle and High School Students in United States and Canada Invited to Apply for Young Naturalists Awards

The American Museum of Natural History and the ALCOA Foundation are accepting applications for the Young Naturalist Awards from middle and high school students (grades 7 to 12) across the United States and Canada.

The inquiry-based research competition was created to promote active participation in the sciences and stimulate youth to explore science careers. The program encourages students to independently explore the natural world and pursue in-depth scientific research in the areas of biology, Earth science, ecology, and astronomy. Contestants form hypotheses, conduct research, plan experiments, gather data, and report their findings in an essay.

Twelve winning students will be honored at a ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Winners will receive a scholarship as well as paid trip to the awards ceremony, where they will meet with scientists and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum. In addition, winning contestants will have their essays featured on the AMNH Web site.

Has Islam Been Hijacked, Zayed vs. Spencer and Imam Moustafa Zayed's New Blog

Imam Moustafa Zayed the renowned Muslim author eradicating Islamophobia through the pen and tongue has recently started a new blog. The blog named "The Lies About Muhammad (pbuh)" is accessible at http://theliesaboutmuhammad.com/ and includes videos, commentary and reflections on Islamophobia and misunderstandings of Islam.

Imam Moustafa Zayed has a degree in Communication Systems Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt, and is a member of the Scientific Board of Quran and Sunnah Research of Cairo. He has appeared numerous times on the NY-area television program, “Understanding Religion”. He speaks widely in Interfaith settings with a devotion to bridging peace between the major religions and communities.
Zayed is also the author of “Muhammad Said”, and is a leading teacher in the Islamic Society of Central Jersey. Imam Zayed was featured as one of ten North American Islamic scholars on Britain’s Channel 4 Documentary, “Islam in America”.

Youth Project Management 101

Saturday Jan. 1st 2011
Boys / Girls Ages 12 – 18

This program is offered to youth who wish to develop project management and leadership skills. It is a mix of presentation, team activities, project development assignments, off-site projects with area Islamic institutions inshaa Allah .

ILIA is training youth on principles of project management on Saturday January 1 2011, participants in the program will have the opportunity to join a team of youth who will act as project managers assisting a Muslim social service, religious or educational organization with planning and managing small projects. Its a great opportunity to learn, give back for the sake of Allah (SWT) and to get community service credit. Teams which work in a community service project, will enter the Greater Washington DC Region Project Planning Competition.

Two Shadowing Internship Seats Available for High Schoolers

Alhamedellah ILIA has two leadership shadowing opportunities for high school students grades 10-12 for 8 weeks starting Dec 10th. Leadership shadowing shall allow the student to learn various leadership skills and styles by accompanying ILIA's leaders on various assignments. Allah (SWT) commanded Musa (pbuh) to go and shadow Al-Khidr to learn from him various traits, specifically the leadership trait of patience. It is encouraged that all young people attend a shadowing program at some point of their life to gain diverse perspectives of work, life and the application of concepts of our deen into practice.

Job shadowing is a ILIA-supervised career exploration activity. Students "shadow” ILIA's leaders as they perform activities and responsibilities. Job shadows are designed to be short term. Leadership shadows emphasize observing the leader in various situations, and occasionally assist with simple assignments. The leadership shadow provides the student a meaningful introduction to the world and provides a context for understanding the relationship and interaction between the academics taught, Islamic values and principles and the society in a leadership context.

Eligibility Requirements:
1. Student must be enrolled in a school or home schooled at one of the grades level of 10 through 12 at time of application.
2. Student must complete a short online application at http://iliajobs.blogspot.com/
3. Student must be able to take time off of school on Fridays between 12:30 and 2:30 to attend jummah prayers (brothers only)
4. Student must be able to devote 2-4 hrs a week for 8 weeks to shadow ILIA leaders.
5. Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5 or higher
6. Parental consent for student to attend the program and participate in ILIA activities on-site and off-site.

Selection Criteria:
1. Only two students shall be selected.
2. Students with best responses to "Motivation and Interest" and "Learning Objectives" shall be selected.
3. Students who are able to secure transportation to ILIA's office at internship/shadowing hours, or go to school / live within 5 miles of ILIA's office.

Successful Completion Requirements:

• Students will be required to participate at least 2 hrs a week, and a minimum of 20 hrs over the 8 weeks.
• Students shall be assessed on commitment, quality of notes taken, demonstration of application of concepts learned during the leadership shadow in various situations, motivation, a short essay at the completion of the program on the benefit the student acquired and the level of responsibility demonstrated during the program
• There shall be a nominal stipend at the end of the internship for students who successfully complete the program with a grade of A.

Tips for Successful Shadowing

• Show up on time.
• Ask questions at appropriate times
• Dress up. You don't have to be formal.  Nice Islamically compliant outfit is required
• Take a notebook and pen or pencil to write notes.
• Get involved and be positive.

ILIA Launches New Youth Project Management Class

Alhamedellah with the grace of Allah (SWT), in its second year of offering of Youth Project Management (YPM 101), ILIA introduces Leading Youth Project Managers - Cost Management (YPM 201) for those who completed YPM 101 in 2009. YPM 201 builds on YPM 101 and focuses on financial cost accounting for projects. It provides youth ages 12-18 the solid understanding of all fundamental financial areas of a project from bill of material, to income sheets and project operational and capital expenses and balance sheets. The project touches on financial earned value and allows youth to communicate effectively with professional project managers in the industry as related to financial aspects of a project. The coaching this year will be offered by ILIA and ILIA will provide all participants with the same project to develop a full project plan for a new training center in Baltimore City, inshaa Allah coaching involves site visits, public hearings and lots of real-life experience.

This program is offered to youth who have already completed Youth Project Management. It is an advanced course enabling these students to lead incoming students into Youth Project Management.

"Leading Youth Project Managers" has multiple focuses, this class focusses on Cost Management and will provide the youth with a comprehensive understanding of project cost estimation, budgeting and expense tracking inshaa Allah .

Its a great opportunity to learn, give back for the sake of Allah (SWT) and to get community service credit. Students who succesfully complete the class will be eligible to:

a. lead and coach a project team of "Youth Project Management" students.

b. join a paid ILIA internship in accounting and bookkeeping.

c. receive community service.

d. compete against other "Leading Youth Project Managers" in the annual Greater Washington DC Region Project Planning Competition., besides there team participtaion.

Character Building for 60 Inmates at Local Jail

Alhamedellah ILIA in launching soon pending funds availability an innovative program at Howard County Detention Center.

The program is open to all inmates Muslims and non-Muslims who meet eligibility requirements. The jail houses 350 inmates of which approx 20 are Muslim brothers.


The program involves an 8 week, 18 course intensive character building program. Funds are needed to purchase books, training supplies and pay for three instructors. Inmates can not afford to pay for tuition so the program is offered as a grant from ILIA to the Howard County Detention Center.

It is a great dawa opportunity and a great program to assist these inmates on reentry into the society to be productive Muslims and citizens.

Training 50 Muslim Juveniles in Laurel

Inshaa Allah ILIA is working hard to provide Islamic character building and development for youth at the Oak Hill detention center, known as New Beginnings.

New Beginnings houses 75 youth of ages 14-18, approx 50-55 of these young men are Muslims. The ILIA program involves 20 courses and a field project which will train the youth in different areas of character building over a school semester.

Funds will be used to purchase books, pay professional instructors, and acquire educational supplies for projects and activities.

ILIA President Eid Khutbah on Eid Al-Adha 1431

 ILIA's President Eid Adha Khutbah for 1431 A.H reflects on sacrifice and its significance in the life of a Muslim as a means to attain the taqwa of Allah (SWT) and inducing positive change in our lives. The khutbah shares key points of the trial Ibrahim and Ismail (pbut) went through and shares lessons for parents, youth and community members. The second part of the khutbah share the current state of the local Muslim ummah in Maryland and offers simple steps to get our communities back on track through mending our foundations, devoting more time to our families, reaching out to help one another, and being elements of change in the society for the betterment of our ummah and nation, all through giving up some of the comforts we enjoy everyday.

Local Homeless in Need of Support

A couple of local muslimah homeless shelters are in need of support with rent and utility expenses. Combined these shelters serve over 25 sisters, some who have children with them. A brother who has been out of work for a year due to medical conditions and slow economy leading to him being homeless with his wife, has alhmaedellah been able to find a job as an escalator technican, he is looking for a used car in the range of $1000 or less, either for donation or purchase. ILIA Joins Local Islamic Organizations in PG County, Maryland to Oppose "Facility Accessory Use" Bill

October 26th, 2010 / Thul Qaida 18th, 1431 - Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Along with half a dozen Islamic organizations from PG County, ILIA prepared a written statement opposing the proposed Bill CB-073-2010 which would have introduced changes to the definition of accessory use of facilities. The bill which if passed would have harmed religious institutions that hold activities serving the needs of its communities such as educational, athletic, social or other related.

The bill was killed by the councilman who proposed the bill on the spot as the hearing room was packed with over 200 community members, students, teachers and Muslim leaders. About the Instructor:
Imam Moustafa Zayed has a degree in communication systems engineering, and a member of the scientific board of Quran and Sunnah research of Cairo. The International Parent Leadership Program (IPLP) gives international parents, especially those who are first-generation immigrants, the information and training they need to actively participate in school, assume a leadership role and help others advocate for the development and achievement of all children in our school system.

This fall, a six-week IPLP training series will be held in selected schools on Mondays, Nov. 1 through Dec. 20, from 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Participants must attend all six sessions to receive a certificate of completion.

Students Receive Prize for Top Score in Lion of the Desert Movie Quiz

Saturday Sept 18, 2010 / Shawaal 9, 1431 Ellicott City, Maryland. As the late hours of the evening were passing away and the leadership movie, Lion of the Desert, coming to an end, a couple dozen students started on there 10 question quiz for middle school age students and 15 question quiz for high school age students. The quiz, a simple multiple choice check point was designed to settle some key concepts into the minds of the students, ranging from key dates mentioned in the movie, to leadership traits exhibited by the various characters and lessons learned. Although the quiz was relatively straight forward, most students received a B- grade. The top student from each category - middle school and high school - received a prize. The middle school student received a battleship game, and the high school student received a book on decision making and smart choices.

Attendees have enjoyed the speeches of Br. Maher Kharma, President of Islamic Society of Annapolis and Imam Mahmoud Abdelhady, Imam of Dar Al-Taqwa as the program started shortly after 6:30 pm. Attendees then performed maghrieb salah and enjoyed the pop corn, veggie sticks, and refreshments while they started to live the scenarios millions of Libyans have experienced in the early 20th century. Another short break for ishaa salat followed by pizza and the remaining half of the movie brought the attendees to full attention as the events in the movie became more highly paced.

ILIA meets community at Muslim FunFest

On Saturday May 29, ILIA participated in Muslim FunFest which was held in Clarsburg, MD. With over 5,000 muslims in attendance and in the midst of children's amusement rides, horeriding, and a packed bazaar, ILIA spoke about its mission, goals, and previous accomplishments. ILIA also passed out flyers for its upcoming events, including Unite Tight. Various representatives from area masjids were present, including Dar Al Taqwa, Muslim Community Center, Dar Us Salam, Islamic Society of Baltimore, and Islamic Community Center of Laurel.

The ILIA booth was staffed by Mohamed Abouerous, Haniffa Osman, and Muhammad Johnson.

ILIA participates in Islamic Society of Baltimore's SummerFest 2010

With the summer heat in full swing, ILIA participated in Islamic Society of Baltimore's SummerFest 2010 on Saturday June 26. ILIA shared information about its mission and goals with ISB's community members. ILIA also continued to promote its programs, including Making the Click/Bridging the Gap and Unite Tight and shared its prior successful programs such as Family Leadership and Mountain Strong. ILIA also met with representatives from MIST (Muslim INterscholatic Tournament) to discuss plans to add a new leadership category to next year's tournament.

The booth was staffed by Founder Ayman Nassar, Mohamed Abouelrous, May Bayomi, and Diangelou Bush, who was completing a summer internship with ILIA.

ILIA is training youth on principles of project management on Dec 5th inshaa Allah, participants in the program will have the opportunity to join a team of youth who will act as project managers assisting a Muslim social service, religious or educational organization with planning and managing small projects. Its a great opportunity to learn, give back for the sake of Allah (SWT) and to get community service credit.
